Visa & Entry Requirements
Most overseas students who come from countries outside the European Union must have permission to enter the United Kingdom (UK). This permission is called Entry Clearance. To find out whether you need entry clearance to enter the UK, visit The UK Visa website.
Even if you are not required to obtain a visa because of your nationality, if you are not a national of the EU you will need, on arrival in the UK, to satisfy the Immigration Officer that you qualify for entry as a student. If you are in any doubt about your eligibility, you should still apply for entry clearance before you travel, especially if your spouse or children are travelling with you.
How do I apply for Entry Clearance?
You should apply for Entry Clearance before leaving your home country, and this can be done at the British Embassy or High Commission in your home country. You will need to complete the IM2A form. It is important to please read page 3 of the form for details on what documents you need to submit along with the IM2A form. Please see FAQs for further information.
In some cases you will be required to attend an interview with an Entry Clearance Officer (ECO). This is a normal part of the process and is an opportunity for the ECO to clarify your application details and to ensure your study plans are genuine and workable.
What if my application is refused?
90% of all student visa applications are successful. If the ECO has said they are not satisfied with the evidence produced to support your application, or if your application is actually refused, contact the university immediately on +44 (0)121 331 5389; international.office@bcu.ac.uk for advice and assistance. Alternatively, visit your nearest http://www.britishcouncil.org.
